the GM Speaks

D. Frank McPherson has a word or two for our listeners:

I would like to say Mahalo Nui Loa to everyone who donated their time, services, and money to KTUH FM Honolulu. This year, over $8,000 was pledged to us. I will keep this message very short and succinct as I want to let everyone know that KTUH is still pushing away at the power increase. At 3,000 Watts, the quality and range will be dramatically increased. There are still a few bumps in the road to the power increase, but we are working on it to ensure that in the very near future, all of our listeners can catch KTUH anywhere and at anytime, instead of in scattered pockets.

As KTUH's General Manager, I would like to thank everyone who helped to make the 1997 Radiothon a huge success.

I would also encourage you, our faithful listeners and supporters to write to us, letting us know how we are doing and how KTUH can better serve you.

Perpetual Groove

Perpetual Groove Nov 8, 1997 - Written by KTUH Promotions Director Greg Denhart.

The last and biggest rave to take place at the now defunct Nimitz Hall happened on November 8, 1997. This event surpassed all other raves at the Nimitz Hall venue with it's world class lineup. Headlining was DJ LARS of MTV Real World fame. This alone would have been enough to make a successful rave, but four equally renown DJs were added to the lineup; all had original music out on respected labels around the US.

DJ Heather, one of the most famous women DJs in the US, lit people up on the mainfloor with her silky house sound, then baffled people with a spectacular hip-hop set in the second room. Go Music recording artist DJ Kam played very hard-hitting trance igniting everyone. DJ Mystic Bill, a legend himself, played a groove so deep that people were almost in an uproar. Ending the night was Jungle DJ Curious from LA. The Jungle masses waited in anticipation to hear him and he did not disappoint- He blew the roof off. Other respected DJs who played and made it a memorable night were G-Spot and Euphorik from KTUH as well as Tricky Trevor, Ikon, 4est, Spex and Mase.

DJs Against AIDS

DJs Against AIDS III Dec 2, 1997 - A report by KTUH's Promotions Director, Greg Denhart.

The first two DJs Against Aids were huge club successes and in combination raised over $4500 for the two AIDS charities: Life Foundation and Student Educators Against AIDS. DJs Against AIDS was formerly an annual event, but supporters wanted it to become Biannual event, hence DJs Against AIDS III.

DJs Against AIDS III took place Tuesday, December 2nd, the day after World AIDS Day at the Wave Waikiki. It was the largest gathering of Honolulu's best DJs to date. Thirty three DJs volunteered for the cause and almost every form of music was represented. There is something about dance charities that helps people loosen up and have a great time and DJs Against AIDS III was no exception. The vibe and the happiness in the air spread to all. Even though DJs Against AIDS III took place on a rainy Tuesday, over 760 people came out to support the cause and $3420 was raised for AIDS education and awareness.

DJs Against AIDS would like to recognize and send a smile to the following sponsors of DJs Against AIDS III: KTUH 90.3, Honolulu Weekly, Odyssey Magazine, Island Lifestyle, Star 101.9 and Double-0-Spot. Look for a future DJs Against AIDS IV.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride

Written by KTUH Program Director, Cedric Duarte.

For a true source of Hip Hop on the radio tune in Thursday nights from 9pm to Midnight on KTUH 90.3 FM Honolulu for "Light Sleepers" with Kavet the Catalyst & the Prude. ( blatant plug )

On Friday October 10th I thought it would be a cool idea to hold an underground Hip Hop party as part of radiothon events. And who else did you think I would get to host the party? That's right Kavet the Catalyst & the Prude! The party was set up at the Centaur Zone in downtown Honolulu. Small, quite out of the way, very undergroud, very "Light Sleepers". Yes, There was a huge party that night at a large local venue and it was definitely "the place to be". But, we didn't even care. I got these guys called the Treehouse Mobile Disco to turn the place from a mild mannered coffee shop into a immaculate nightclub. The tables were spinning and the speakers went up alongside a mad light show and slowly all the hip hop heads reared their ugly mugs in support of KTUH.

The Party was, in my non-biased opinion, a great success. DJs were spinning old school funk, hard hip hop and even a little drum & bass for our buddies in the corner. There were a couple of crazy open mic performances and the night ended with a turntablist session. On top of sucking down the Centaur Zones coffee & kick ass cheese cake I think everyone who came enjoyed the music & just the whole ambience of what KTUH describes as "Light Sleepers". Fuck that, we kicked some serious ass that night and proved it is possible to pull off a non-alcoholic underground hip hop party on this island.

Now just hold on one second! Look around and think about where you just came from... and figure out how you came to be in the position you are in right now. And why are you reading this lame story in the Mute Voice? What the hell is a mute voice anyway? (Editor's note, a mute voice is a zen koan grasshopper) Even better, why was I running a red light to get to a gas station before I run out of gas at 4:30 in the morning with a babbling fool, I've known for seven years sitting in my truck with all those records asking me "Ced, What do I do?" while the whole damn time I'm craving a Jumbo Jack. You tell me.

There could have been worse places to be on a dark and rainy Friday night than in a dirty ass part of downtown Honolulu. So being the optimist I am I wasn't concerned when it was just myself and 3 guys standing on a sidewalk in front of the Centaur Zone at a quarter to 3 am.

"So Kav, where is she?" (If you follow the Light Sleepers show on KTUH you may also remember she as "brown sugar".)

"She borrowed my car to go to that big party with your friends and she's supposed to pick me up!"

"Man, its almost 4 and its raining."

"I know what if something happened?"

So we all take off, Me & Kav go driving around looking for "brown sugar" with Kavet's car. And then at about 4 we get the page of where she is and my truck runs out of gas....shit...and to think I thought our party was a total success. I suppose you just had to be there.

Tales from the Gimp

Written by KTUH Assistant Promotions Director, David Chang.

Hello, I'm David, and I'm the KTUH gimp. I guess that I could say that the reason that a lot of people who get involved with KTUH do so because of a general dissatisfaction for radio in general. The only time that I every really had to listen to radio is in someone else's car. Radio as a whole has a tendency to be reasonably bland with a very tight rotation. The idea of being able to play almost anything you see fit is fantastic (and sounds a lot easier than it is). So, I signed up, waited a few months and got the call. I also got a big number 10 next to my name. When you join KTUH, there's an orientation session that outlines your responsibilities, Among them is 10 hours of service, and this is my story, a story of an addict to the service.

Like most people, I don't like to be indebted, so I started to do what I could to help out. Phone calls for the radiothon, folding copies of the mute voice, etc. I kept thinking to myself, where are all the perks? Visions of free CD's danced in my head but few were forthcoming. However the good people at Golden Voice do set aside a small list for KTUH staffers who want to go to concerts gratis baby, so I sign up to go to the Big Mele. The Big Mele seems to have less to do with music that it does about sitting around in a field cultivating a nice sunburn.

Thankfully I actually had something to do there that took my mind off the fact that the band that I came to see didn't show up. That something was handing out copies of the Mute Voice and KTUH stickers. Now, I would imagine that a lot of you might never have had to hand out flyers or stickers to a crowd before. Well I have, and let me tell you, when you do you enter a whole sad subculture of people all standing around the exit of some concert trying to get people (very weary people) to take what you offer them. There's a camaraderie that you share with the fellows around you who are also passing out their various promotional materials. OK, I'm lying. You really only want people to pay attention to what you're giving them. I mean god forbid some yahoo is trying to throw a party on the same day KTUH is. Let's just say when everything is good and done and your walking back to your car, you don't want to see 1000 KTUH stickers on the ground in the parking lot. So, how do you do it? Just remember, don't say, "Do you wanna sticker?", you have to bellow "Here is the Holy sacrament of FM radio!" Thrust you arm out with a sticker in your hand and a grin on your mug.

We all help each other out here at the station, for example, "Chet," the alterego to KTUH's own Joseph Hart. Before the Chet personality passed away, he passed out at the Big Mele. As we were packing up to leave Cedric turns to me and says, "Ok, do you want to carry the table, or Joe?"

The Radiothon was the next big KTUH event on the calender, and let me tell you countless volunteer hours go into this bad boy. Seeing an opportunity to finish all my community service hours at one time, I signed myself up to do a 24 hour straight radio shift. Now, staying awake for 24 hours is relatively easy, but when those hours are from one midnight to another, it's more like staying up for two days straight. I don't really remember much from that ordeal than remembering making up some bit saying "My captors are treating me well and want me to read from this prepared statement. KTUH is trying to increase their power from 100 watts to..." And now that that's behind me, and I look back at the year of fun, yeah, my captors are treating me well.
